SUMMARY:Anette Stimmer (St Andrews) Book Launch: ‘The Politics of International Norms: A Rhetorical Approach’
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to invite you to the launch of Anette Stimmer (St Andrews)’s latest book\, The Politics of International Norms: A Rhetorical Approach (Cambridge University Press\, 2025)\, jointly hosted by the ILCR and CGLG.\n\nThe main discussant of the book will be the ILCR Co-Director\, John Hudson.\n____________\nAbout the Book\nNorm contestation is prevalent in international affairs: Legal ambiguities and tensions generate debate\, even when well-established international norms are applied to concrete situations. This book discusses a wide range of norm disputes and develops a rhetorical approach to the politics of international norms. Anette Stimmer demonstrates how actors can agree or disagree on the norm frame (norm-based justification) and/or behavioral claim (implementing action) when applying international law. Thus\, norm contestation can have four “alternate endings”: norm impasse\, norm neglect\, norm recognition\, and norm clarification. These alternate endings affect the clarity and strength of the contested norms\, as well as subsequent debate\, differently. Furthermore\, Stimmer explains how three classical elements of rhetoric–speakers (including delegation to agents)\, argumentation\, and audience reactions– influence the duration and outcome of contestation. This rhetorical approach is applied to eight norm disputes\, ranging from military interventions to contestation over the human rights of terror suspects.\n\nAbout the Author\nAnette Stimmer is a Lecturer in International Relations at the University of St Andrews and Co-Director of the St Andrews Centre for Global Law and Governance. Her research focuses on how normative beliefs shape foreign policy decision-making and how decision-makers influence international law and norms\, particularly concerning the (non-)use of military force. Her work has been published in International Studies Quarterly\, the European Journal of International Relations\, International Affairs\, and the Journal of Global Security Studies.\n____________\nThis promises to be an engaging discussion\, and we would love for you to join us!\n

SUMMARY:Bill Miller (Michigan) Reading group on “Audun (and the polar bear)” (i)
DESCRIPTION:______________\nReading Group on “Audun (and the Polar Bear)” (i)\nTime: 4pm\nLocation: Room 9 (next to the Old Seminar Room)\, Mediaeval History Building\n\nDescribed as one of the finest short stories in world literature\, Audun’s Story follows Audun\, an Icelandic farmhand\, on his perilous quest. Through terse prose and skilful storytelling\, it brings to life characters like Audun\, Harald Hardradi and King Svein\, revealing layers of social and legal nuance. Professor Miller’s analysis places this tale alongside classical works on gift-exchange and social interaction\, making it of interest to legal and cultural historians\, anthropologists\, economists\, and literary scholars alike.\n\nAs pre-reading\, you can read pages 1-21 of Bill Miller’s book Audun and the Polar Bear: Luck\, Law\, and Largesse in a Medieval Tale of Risky Business. a hardcopy as well as the eBook is accessible via the University of St Andrews Library.\n \nAll are welcome!\n____________\nBill Miller’s expertise in saga Iceland and his extensive research on emotions\, virtues\, and vices make him an exceptional guide for our exploration of Audun’s Saga. His notable works\, including ‘Humiliation’\, ‘The Anatomy of Disgust’\, ‘The Mystery of Courage’\, and ‘Outrageous Fortune: Gloomy Reflections on Luck and Life’\, showcase his profound understanding of human nature and legal frameworks. Bill Miller has also been a visiting professor at Yale\, the University of Chicago\, and Harvard\, bringing a wealth of knowledge and insight to our reading group discussions. He is a regular visitor to St Andrews and an Honorary Professor in the ILCR (see Kimberley-Joy Knight and John Hudson\, ‘Miller(ed) in St Andrews’\, in Emotion\, Violence\, Vengeance and Law in the Middle Ages\, also available as an E-book in the University Library).
