Celebrating Baroness Levitt KC: A Legal Luminary and ILCR Advisory Board Member

The Institute of Legal and Constitutional Research proudly celebrates the elevation of Baroness Levitt KC to the House of Lords in January 2025. Having been created Baroness Levitt, of Beachamwell Warren in the County of Norfolk, she took the oath of allegiance in the Lords Chamber, supported by Lord Carlile of Berriew and Lord Kennedy of Southwark.

Her elevation to the peerage follows a distinguished legal career spanning more than three decades. Called to the Bar in 1988, she took Silk in 2008. She played a pivotal role within the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) as Principal Legal Advisor to the then Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC, in 2009. In 2014, she joined Mishcon de Reya LLP as a partner before returning to the Bar at 2 Hare Court in 2018, where she had originally been a pupil.

Her expertise in legal inquiries and investigations has been widely recognised, leading to her appointment as a Circuit Judge in 2021. Upon her elevation to the Lords, she resigned from the judiciary and has now rejoined 2 Hare Court, where her practice will focus on inquiries, investigations into public and private entities, and disciplinary proceedings.

Baroness Levitt’s appointment comes as part of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s nominations for life peerages in late 2024. Sitting on the Government benches, she is expected to bring her wealth of legal experience to legislative matters, particularly in areas of justice and regulatory affairs.

As a distinguished member of the ILCR Advisory Board, Baroness Levitt has made outstanding contributions to legal scholarship and practice. The ILCR team extends its warmest congratulations on this well-deserved appointment!
